What to Include in a Census Transcription

I struggle with including complete census transcriptions in the newsletter–more with the formatting of them than anything else. It can be really easy to have quite a bit of wasted space.

We’ve decided to transcribe the crucial elements for each entry as close to the original format as possible and include other information in a paragraph after the transcription.

We’re not leaving anything out, but I’m not certain it’s necessary to reproduce the census form in an issue of the newsletter.

An 1870 Census Enumeration

Always a good idea not to jump to conclusions about the family structure based just on one document.

I usually assume a document I’m working with is reasonably accurate until I have information that suggests otherwise.
